face Yakima Reds at Interbay Stadium on Sunday, May 30th. Kickoff is at 3pm
(Seattle, WA)- On May 27th, 2010 Washington Crossfire got off to a roaring start in their franchise debut at home, with a decisive 7-2 victory over the visiting Spokane Spiders. After scoring only 1 goal in its first two matches, Crossfire got on the board early with a Nick James goal in the 6th minute, only to see its tally increased to 2 goals less than 3 minutes later on a wonder strike from Forward and Man of the Match Matt Vanhouten, who sent a beautiful curling ball from the right side of the box that settled in the back of the net on the left post.
Spokane fought back to 1-2 by half-time on a strike by forward Nicholas Love that eluded goalkeeper Chris Blais. Seth Spidahl’s men were undaunted however and resumed their hunt for goals immediately after the break. Vanhouten opened up the scoring once more in the second half, outfoxing goalkeeper Garret Brickey and finishing with a neat far post strike. It did not take Vanhouten, a UW soccer prodigy much longer to find his hat trick, as the striker pushed a third one across in the 58th minute of play with a clean finish past a diving Brickey.
Crossfire continued to retain possession and control the run of play with effectiveness throughout the remainder of the half, seeing 3 more goals, one a beautiful chip from forward Ryan Luke, set up by a wonderful play in by midfielder Charlie Piehler, making his debut for Washington Crossfire on his home turf of Interbay Stadium at Seattle Pacific University. Piehler was one of the Crossfire athletes to add to the tally as well, slotting a ball into the left side of the net in the 71st minute of play.
